Fate Unknown

The objects in this collection are replicas of 25 actual items discovered over a six-month period in the Club Room of a luxury residential building in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Each item was left behind by an anonymous resident.

In each case, an object simply appeared one day. The circumstances of the individual appearances remained unexplained.

The date of each object's disappearance is noted. In all but one case—a forced removal by building management—the object's fate remained unknown. All that was known was that the work was no longer in the Club Room.

Together, these objects form an accidental archive of transition: possessions suspended between ownership and disposal, usefulness and obsolescence, intention and neglect.

The objects themselves are less interesting to me than the decisions that placed them here. What prevents someone from throwing away a broken picture frame? What makes four remaining coffee filters feel worth saving, but not worth keeping? Is a universal adapter simply one piece of stuff too many for a kitchen drawer?

And is there really anyone out there who wants half a container of someone else’s arborio rice?
